Albania is still a relatively unexplored country, but it has so much to offer. Breathtaking mountain views and beautiful beaches, it has something for everyone!
In this travel guide, I have many recommendations including tours, places to eat and hidden gems that I discovered travelling with WeRoad. You need to add this to your euro summer destination list!
Day 1 (travel day): Tirana
From the airport, it’s easy to reach the centre of Tirana by either taxi (around €15) or bus (around €4.50), with both options taking you into the city relatively quickly. Tirana is such an interesting, colourful capital, full of vibrant streets, quirky architecture and a fascinating history. Depending on what time you arrive, I’d highly recommend joining a walking tour to really get a feel for the city and learn more about its past and culture. If you don’t have time on arrival, you can always do one at the end of your trip instead.
Dinner recommendation: Ceren Ismet Shehu
Hotel recommendation (days 1 & 2): Hotel Antigone
Day 2: a day trip to Komani Lake
I’d highly recommend taking a day trip to Komani Lake. The boat ride, which lasts around an hour, is incredibly scenic, with dramatic mountains and crystal-clear water making it one of the highlights of northern Albania. Once you arrive at the Shale River, you can spend the day relaxing by the water, sunbathing, enjoying lunch, or making the most of the activities on offer, including watersports and ziplining. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
Head back to Tirana in the late afternoon and enjoy a delicious traditional meal at Oda Restaurant
Day 3: the start of the road trip
Set off from Tirana in the morning and begin the drive south towards the UNESCO World Heritage city of Berat, often referred to as the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Your first stop is the magnificent Berat Castle, one of the few inhabited castles in Europe, where entrance is free. Perched high above the city, the fortress offers incredible panoramic views over Berat and the surrounding mountains. Spend some time wandering through its ancient stone streets, discovering centuries-old churches, traditional Ottoman houses, and hidden corners that make this one of Albania’s most fascinating historic sites.
After exploring the castle, drive down into Berat’s charming city centre. Stroll through the iconic Mangalemi neighbourhood, famous for its rows of white Ottoman houses cascading down the hillside, creating the city’s distinctive “thousand windows” appearance. Make your way to the elegant Gorica Bridge, which connects the historic Mangalemi and Gorica quarters across the Osum River. This is one of the most picturesque spots in Berat and the perfect place to soak up the city’s unique atmosphere and capture some beautiful photos.
For lunch, stop at Konak Restaurant, where you can enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine in a relaxed setting before continuing your journey.
After lunch, it’s time to head towards the Albanian Riviera. The drive to Dhërmi is one of the most scenic in the country, winding through dramatic mountain landscapes before revealing spectacular views of the sparkling Ionian Sea. Arrive in Dhërmi in the evening, where crystal-clear turquoise waters, white pebble beaches, and a laid-back coastal atmosphere await – an idyllic place to unwind after a day of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery.
Hidden gem: stop at Sotirë waterfall for a refreshing dip.
Hotel recommendation (days 3 & 4): Season Inn
Day 4: Beach day & boat tour
After yesterday’s drive, spend today slowing the pace and enjoying everything the Albanian Riviera has to offer. Take your time in the morning before heading to one of the stunning beaches near Dhërmi (you’ll need to drive to whichever beach you choose). This stretch of coastline is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, and relaxed beach clubs, making it the perfect place to unwind.
Some of the best beaches nearby include:
- Jale Beach – A lively bay with beautifully clear water, great swimming conditions, and plenty of beach bars and restaurants.
- Drymades Beach – One of the Riviera’s most picturesque beaches, known for its long stretch of white pebbles, vibrant blue sea, and laid-back atmosphere.
- Llaman Beach – A smaller, more sheltered cove surrounded by cliffs, perfect if you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter to relax.
Spend the afternoon swimming in the Ionian Sea, sunbathing, or enjoying lunch and drinks by the beach while taking in the incredible coastal scenery.
In the early evening, I’d highly recommend joining a boat tour to the famous Pirate’s Cave. We chose to go by speedboat, which made the experience even more exciting as we zipped along the spectacular coastline, passing hidden coves, sea caves, and secluded beaches that can only be reached by water. The views of the rugged cliffs meeting the brilliant blue sea are absolutely unforgettable, and the cave itself is a real highlight of the trip.
For dinner, head to Noah on the Beach. Located right on the waterfront, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy a relaxed meal with the sound of the waves in the background after a day by the sea.
If you’re still in the mood for a drink afterwards, take the short 10-minute walk along the coast to Salinas Beach Bar. With free entry, it’s a great place to end the evening with cocktails, music, and a lively beach atmosphere while making the most of the warm Riviera nights.
Day 5: Butrint Archaeological Park & the blue eye spring
Begin the day with a visit to Butrint National Park, one of Albania’s most remarkable historical sites and an absolute must for anyone with an interest in ancient history, archaeology, or architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Butrint is home to the ruins of an ancient Greek and Roman city that has been inhabited for over 2,500 years. As you wander through the site, you’ll discover remarkably well-preserved landmarks, including a Roman theatre, ancient temples, city walls, basilicas, and Venetian fortifications, all surrounded by beautiful wetlands and lush woodland. It’s a fascinating place where centuries of history come together in one spectacular setting. Entrance costs 1,000 LEK (approximately €10).
After exploring Butrint, continue to one of Albania’s most famous natural attractions, the Blue Eye Spring (Syri i Kaltër). This breathtaking karst spring is renowned for its unbelievably clear, vivid blue water, which appears to glow from beneath the surface. Although the exact depth remains unknown, the spring is thought to be over 50 metres deep, making it as mysterious as it is beautiful.
From the entrance, you have a few different ways to reach the spring. You can rent an electric scooter for a fun and easy ride through the shaded forest, hop on the small tourist train (300 LEK one way or 500 LEK for a return ticket), or enjoy the peaceful 20-minute walk along the scenic path. However you choose to get there, the journey is part of the experience, and the reward is one of Albania’s most photographed natural wonders. Spend some time taking in the incredible colours of the water, wandering the surrounding paths, and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere before continuing your journey to Saranda.
Hotel recommendation (days 5 & 6): Mediterrane Hotel
Day 6: Saranda bays
I’d highly recommend taking another boat tour from Sarandë to experience a different side of the Albanian Riviera. This stretch of coastline is absolutely stunning, with secluded beaches, hidden coves, dramatic limestone cliffs, and crystal-clear turquoise water that are best appreciated from the sea. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax, swim in some of the clearest water you’ll ever see, and enjoy a completely different perspective of Albania’s spectacular southern coastline.
As you cruise so close to the Greek border, don’t be surprised if your phone suddenly switches networks and welcomes you to Greece—it’s a fun reminder of just how far south you’ve travelled! On a clear day, you’ll even be able to enjoy beautiful views across the Ionian Sea towards the Greek island of Corfu.
In the evening, we loved having dinner at Olive Tree Restaurant, a fantastic spot to end the day with delicious food, a relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful views after another unforgettable day exploring the Albanian coast.
Day 7: Water rafting!
If you’re in the mood for a little adventure before leaving Sarandë, I’d highly recommend trying a white-water rafting experience. It’s a brilliant way to add one final thrill to your Albanian road trip, with exciting rapids, beautiful scenery, and plenty of opportunities to cool off in the river. Whether you’re an experienced rafter or trying it for the first time, it’s an unforgettable experience and a fantastic way to get your adrenaline pumping before the journey back north.
Be sure to wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes, along with a pair of lightweight shorts (avoid denim, as they’ll stay heavy and wet). Most tours provide the necessary safety equipment, but you’ll definitely appreciate having a towel and a change of clothes waiting for you afterwards.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop for lunch at Te Culi, a great spot to enjoy delicious traditional slow-cooked Albanian dishes. It’s the perfect place to refuel before the drive, with hearty local food that’s well worth experiencing.
After lunch, it’s time to make your way back to Tirana. It’s a fairly long drive, so make sure you’re stocked up with plenty of snacks, water, and your favourite road trip playlist. The journey takes you back through some of Albania’s beautiful mountain and coastal landscapes, offering one last chance to soak in the incredible scenery before arriving back in the capital and bringing your adventure to a close.
Hotel recommendation (day 7): Hotel Signature Idea
Day 8: Travel day
If your flight isn’t until later in the day, make the most of your remaining time in Tirana before heading to the airport. The city is compact and easy to explore, making it perfect for squeezing in a few final experiences.
One great option is to take a Tirana Street Art Tour, which offers a fascinating look at the city’s colourful murals and creative urban spaces. Along the way, you’ll discover how Tirana has transformed over the years, with vibrant artwork now covering many buildings and public spaces, reflecting the city’s culture, history, and modern identity.
Another excellent stop is Bunk’Art 2, one of Tirana’s most unique museums. Housed inside a former Cold War nuclear bunker, the museum provides an immersive insight into Albania’s communist past, exploring the country’s political history, secret police, and everyday life during the dictatorship. It’s a thought-provoking experience and one of the city’s most popular attractions.
When it’s time for one last meal before your flight, I’d recommend heading to the Food Market. With a wide variety of local and international food stalls, it’s an ideal place to sample a few more Albanian dishes, grab a relaxed lunch, or simply enjoy a coffee before making your way to the airport. It’s a great way to end your trip on a delicious note before saying goodbye to Albania.
